KEVIN SWINDELL FAST AT LANIER
Memphis, TN --
Sep 5, 2005 --
Kevin Swindell had the crowd at Lanier Speedway standing and cheering after he turned two amazing laps during qualifying at the United Sprint Car Association event on Saturday night. The first was a new track record turning in a time of 11.371, but the next lap got the standing ovation. Lap two went down in the record books at 11.141 seconds at a speed of 121.141 mph. What even made the lap more incredible was that the second fastest qualifier was over half a second slower with a time of 11.655.
“We came here earlier in the year and just did not hit the setup," Kevin explained. "We worked really hard on Friday during the test session and found what I needed to get around here. We knew we had a fast car, but that lap even surprised me. The best part is that I think I still had a little more for them. The bad part is now I have to start the feature race behind everybody because of the invert.”
The inversion did play a huge part in the outcome of the feature race. Swindell was able to get to third place within a few laps, but was forced to follow the leaders the entire green flag race.
“We just could not get around the second place car. I tried everything, then halfway through my brakes quit. I ran the final 15 laps or so without any brakes at all. It was tough just getting the car to turn after that. I was really disappointed because I think we had the car to beat.”
The next race for Kevin will be this coming Friday, September 9, at Memphis Motorsports Park and Saturday, September 10, at Riverside Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas. He will rejoin the touring World of Outlaws September 16 and 17 at Eagle Raceway in Lincoln, Nebraska.
